In a development that has raised fresh concerns among investors, Chinese authorities have recently detained four Taiwanese employees working for Hon Hai Precision Industry, a key partner for Apple in its assembly operations.

Four employees of Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China under “quite strange” circumstances, Taiwan’s government said.

The arrests comes amid a growing trend of similar detentions that have sparked unease over the safety of foreign business interests in the region.

According to Elsie Tsai, a spokeswoman for Taiwan’s Straits Exchange Foundation, the detained individuals are all Taiwanese nationals.

The Foundation, which assists Taiwanese citizens with matters related to mainland China, has emphasised that there is no indication the employees were involved in any activities that would harm Hon Hai’s business interests.

Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, is one of the largest players in the global tech manufacturing industry, and any disruption within its operations in China can have far-reaching consequences.

Taiwanese authorities have suggested that the detentions may have been the result of local law enforcement officials exceeding their authority, though the exact reasons behind the arrests remain unclear.

With Donald Trump officially back in the White House, the tech sector is bracing for a wave of change. Trump’s win brings a high level of unpredictability due to his often bold and surprising decisions.

But with the guidance of key advisors, particularly Elon Musk, we have a glimpse of how Trump’s policies might reshape the industry, especially around AI, antitrust, and China.

Here’s a look at what Trump 2.0 could mean for tech.

Antitrust Shake-up: Is Lina Khan Out?

In keeping with his pro-business agenda, Trump is expected to take a deregulatory stance on tech, starting with cryptocurrency.

One of his earliest moves could be the removal of Lina Khan, the head of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Appointed by Biden, Khan has taken a progressive approach to antitrust enforcement, focusing on the power Big Tech wields over consumers, even when many services are free. Her firm stance has made her unpopular among tech giants, with Musk himself calling for her dismissal.

If Trump does replace Khan, the FTC could ease back on its aggressive stance on antitrust. Yet, several landmark cases—initiated during Trump’s first term—will continue, including a lawsuit against Google for monopolising search and a high-stakes case against Meta that could potentially force the separation of Instagram and WhatsApp from the company.

AI is now the heartbeat of tech, driving every new gadget and software upgrade with unprecedented capabilities.

The surge has led to a massive demand for semiconductor chips, the essential building blocks for everything digital—from your smartphone and camera to your refrigerator and LED lights.

Some of these chips, like Apple’s powerhouse M4 chip, are redefining what technology can do. Capable of handling a staggering 38 trillion operations per second, the M4 enables features like Live Captions and Visual Look Up on the iPad Pro and is 60 times faster than Apple’s first Neural Engine.

Given the power and influence of these chips, it’s no surprise that countries are fiercely competing for control over this vital market.

U.S. Pushes for Chip Production Dominance

The United States is doubling down on domestic chip production. Through the CHIPS Act, the government announced in April it would award up to $6.4 billion in grants to South Korea’s Samsung to expand chip manufacturing in Texas.

The U.S. has also pressured allies like the Netherlands, Japan, and South Korea to limit their chip exports to China. In response, these countries have enacted their own restrictions.

Last June, the Dutch government announced plans to restrict semiconductor technology exports, citing national security, while Germany recently stopped shipments of older lithography machines to China. Japan imposed its own export controls on advanced microchip technology last year.

In the bustling heart of New Delhi, the sun sets on another day, casting long shadows not just over the streets but also over the lives of millions of citizens.

The global economy is often portrayed as an intricate web, where each country plays a vital role. However, beneath the surface of India’s rapid growth lies a stark reality that is increasingly troubling, especially for our most vulnerable: the elderly.

Recent reports reveal a disturbing trend: India, once seen as a powerhouse of potential, is becoming a significant contributor to global economic instability.

While its GDP growth rates appear robust, the impact of rising inflation and a crumbling social safety net is profoundly affecting the globes aging population.

Meanwhile, millions of elderly individuals, who should be enjoying their twilight years, are instead grappling with a financial disaster due to a scam based out of India.

A surge of scams originating from India is wreaking havoc not only on local victims but also on the global economy, with vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, bearing the brunt.

These scams often target the elderly, who may lack technological savvy and be more easily swayed by persuasive tactics.

The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has fined Meta €91 million ($147 million) following a security lapse in when the company admitted to mistakenly storing users’ passwords in plaintext.

Launched by the DPC the investigation uncovered that Meta violated four articles of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The inquiry was first opened five years ago after Meta notified the DPC that it had stored some passwords in plaintext.

The DPC criticised Meta for failing to promptly notify them of the breach, document incidents related to the plaintext storage of passwords, and implement adequate technical measures to protect user confidentiality.

While Meta disclosed that this privacy issue affected a subset of Facebook users’ passwords, it stated there was no evidence that the exposed data was accessed or misused internally.

Some of the exposed passwords date back to 2012, with a senior employee revealing that around 2,000 engineers or developers conducted approximately nine million internal queries for data containing plaintext user passwords.

A month later, Meta acknowledged that millions of Instagram passwords were also stored in a similar manner and announced plans to notify affected users.

“It is widely accepted that user passwords should not be stored in plaintext, considering the risks of abuse that arise from persons accessing such data,” Graham Doyle, deputy commissioner at the DPC, said in a press statement.

A Brazilian judge in a legal dispute with X owner Elon Musk announced on Friday that he would reinstate the social network in Brazil if a fine of approximately $1.8 million is paid.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had ordered X to shut down in Brazil last month after Musk declined to remove several right-wing accounts and failed to appoint a new legal representative in the country as required.

According to Moraes, for X to be reactivated it Musk needs to shell out and pay a fine of 10 million reais ($1.84 million), after denying a request to lift the suspension.

He also announced the platform would face penalties for failing to comply with an order to suspend a server that allowed it to temporarily bypass the nationwide ban for two days.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes has been locked in a prolonged feud with Elon Musk as part of his efforts to combat disinformation in Brazil.

The clash between the Brazilian court and the billionaire has evolved into a significant battle over the limits of free speech and corporate responsibility in South America’s largest country.

X had more than 22 million users in Brazil before the ban, which came into place on August 31.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has announced a significant shift in workplace policy, calling for employees to fully return to the office by the beginning of 2025.

Under the new directive, employees will be expected to work onsite five days a week, a departure from the current arrangement that has permitted three days of in-office work for the past 15 months.

Remote work will only be allowed under exceptional circumstances, which many employees may find restrictive.

This decision reflects Jassy’s belief in the importance of in-person collaboration and the benefits of a cohesive office environment. He emphasised that face-to-face interactions foster innovation and strengthen team dynamics, critical components for maintaining Amazon’s competitive edge in the tech industry.

The push for a complete return to the office is part of a larger trend among Big Tech leaders. Many executives have championed return-to-office mandates, asserting that such measures are essential for enhancing productivity and collaboration.

However, the policies have met with mixed reactions from the workforce. Some tech employees have expressed frustration and concern over the loss of flexibility that remote work offers, which they argue has been instrumental in achieving a healthy work-life balance.

The ongoing debate around remote work versus in-office mandates has highlighted the tensions between corporate expectations and employee preferences.

The beleaguered aerospace giant Boeing now appears to be teetering on the brink of a labor strike.

The proposed deal includes a 25% wage increase for workers. However, the feedback from employees has been less than enthusiastic. general sentiment among the workers is that this offer falls short of their expectations

Jon Holden, head of the International Association of Machinists Union District 751, which represents over 30,000 Boeing employees says he anticipates the union members will likely reject the company’s proposed contract.

The proposed contract offers a 25% wage increase by the end of its four-year term, set to expire in September 2028. It also includes higher minimum wage rates, reduced mandatory overtime, and paid parental leave.

Additionally, it promises to give union members and leaders a role in overseeing Boeing’s production system’s safety and quality. It also ensures that Boeing’s next commercial airplane will be manufactured in Washington state and Oregon.

“The response from people is it’s not good enough “Right now, I think it will be voted down, and our members will vote to strike.” says Holden

On Thursday, approximately 33,000 members of the Machinists union across California, Washington, and Oregon will cast their votes on the proposed contract and a potential strike. If the vote goes as Jon Holden anticipates, a strike could be imminent, potentially starting at midnight local time on Friday.

The new partnership between Oracle and AWS marks a major step forward in Oracle’s multi-cloud strategy.

By enabling Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Exadata Database Service to run on AWS infrastructure, customers will benefit from the strengths of both platforms—Oracle’s powerful database technologies combined with AWS’s vast cloud ecosystem.

The collaboration is particularly important for businesses that already rely on Oracle databases but want to leverage AWS’s analytics, AI, and compute services without the need for complicated migrations.

Oracle Database@AWS allows for easier management through familiar AWS tools like the AWS Management Console and CLI, and it supports direct integration with AWS services such as EC2 and AI-driven solutions like Amazon Bedrock.

The zero-ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) integration also stands out, as it streamlines the connection between Oracle databases and AWS’s analytics offerings.

This could simplify the data pipeline, reduce latency, and improve performance for businesses managing large datasets or complex workflows.

Oracle’s Chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison, says the multi-cloud approach is a response to customer demand for flexibility, while AWS’s Matt Garman highlighted the long history of Oracle workloads on AWS and the unified experience this partnership provides for migrating and managing databases.
