The first instalment of the podcast is hosted by Miki Luong, IBM Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, spotlighting IBM’s AI experts and thought leaders.

“Generative AI has taken off so suddenly that it’s easy to feel left behind,” said Ms Luong.

“When we hosted our Uncharted event series across Australia (exploring generative AI for an executive audience), we found that even the most accomplished leaders felt unsure about the full implications of this space.

“And if experts in their field don’t feel confident leading a technology as groundbreaking as generative AI, then where does that leave the rest of us?”

“IBM Uncharted: Generative AI explored is our way of trying to answer and amplify the many questions and conversations happening right within organisations,”

“We hope our series will help listeners discover how artificial intelligence will continue to impact the way we work and live,” said Ms Luong.

The first episode features Luong and Adam Makarucha, IBM Client Engineering Leader, exploring the fundamentals of generative AI.

Cook Governments first investment from its $7.2million state programme with global tech accelerator

  • Cook Government’s Nature Tech Accelerator kicks off
  • Six nature tech start-ups chosen after rigorous selection
  • Start-ups to gain from expertise of top global accelerator

A project developing “plant factories” to grow food in space and a start-up creating seaweed compounds to cut methane emissions from cattle are among the first participants in the Founders Factory WA Nature Tech Accelerator program.

Launched earlier this year, the Cook Government’s partnership with global start-up accelerator Founders Factory has selected six promising early-stage start-ups to receive seed capital and expert guidance.

Founders Factory, a global tech investor with programs in cities like London, Milan, Berlin, Johannesburg, and New York, has backed over 300 companies worldwide.

Its new Perth-based accelerator, supported by a $7.2 million investment from the Cook Government, marks its latest venture.

Each start-up will receive $50,000 in funding to support their early-stage development, often before generating revenue. Over the next four months, these businesses will participate in an intensive program, receiving tailored support designed to help them scale and succeed.

The accelerator program will run over three years and mitigates the need for ambitious local start-ups to exit the State to pursue their global scaling goals.

WhistleOut, Australia’s dedicated phone and internet comparison service, recently announced the winners of the 2024 WhistleOut Awards.

The WhistleOut Award categories for phone and internet plans are judged by awarding 3, 2 and 1 points to the providers of the three best plans in each category on a monthly basis, (July 2023 – June 2024).

The award winners are the providers with the highest number of points at the end of the 12 month period. In case of a tie, winners are chosen based on the number of 1st positions, then 2nd positions, then 3rd positions they achieved in that category over the course of the year.

Echoing last year’s awards in 2023, the biggest winners were again TPG and Tangerine, taking out the Mobile and Internet Provider of the Year Awards respectively.

Google also took home Phone of the Year for the second year running for the Google Pixel 8a, while Motorola won the Manufacturer of the Year award.

As with last year there were again a number of repeat award winners, with a select few providers having now won individual categories three or more years in a row.

“It’s no secret that cost of living pressures have continued to restrict people’s budgets and it’s clear from our visitor feedback that pricing is their key decision-making component. Value for money is the top priority in a telco product right now,” said WhistleOut Managing Editor, Alex Choros.

The winner of the 2024 ESET Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship has been announced, in conjunction with World Day for Cultural Diversity.

This year’s winner is Lucy Fidock, a dedicated and passionate student pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science (Advanced) at the University of Adelaide

The scholarship was launched in 2016 is part of ESET’s global Women in Cybersecurity Scholarship program for women currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program majoring in a STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) field.

This is the third year for the scholarship in Australia, and the second year ESET is teaming up with the Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security, Clare O’Neil.

Experts predict Australia needs a further 5,000 cybersecurity workers annually to meet the target of being the most secure country in the world by 2030, which is why the Cyber Security Strategy invested $8.6 million towards accelerating the cyber industry in Australia.

As Minister O’Neil said, “to make Australia the most cyber-secure country in the world by 2030 we need to invest in the people who will defend Australians and our assets from this massive and growing threat,”

“The percentage of women in cyber security is growing, and initiatives such as ESET’s scholarships complement the work the Government is doing to support that influx of women.”

The Alfred hospital has commenced clinical trials with BrainEye, a ground-breaking smartphone app which can help screen for neurological abnormalities using a 60 second eye movement test.

The study aims to recruit 500 participants across Australia with a variety of neurological conditions, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis (MS), who will have their brain function assessed using BrainEye’s eye tracking application.

BrainEye will collect data through its artificial intelligence platform, which measures and compares more than 20 ocular biomarkers that the naked eye struggles to see. The data will then be compared to readings from neurologically healthy individuals to enhance the app’s recognition and understanding of normal and abnormal brain function.

Neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide, and the second leading cause of death after heart disease, but the ability to detect and treat them is currently hampered by a lack of appropriate and cost-effective biomarkers which measure and monitor change in brain function.

The datasets collected within this trial will assist BrainEye in developing a commercial product that can be used in the community to detect and monitor neurodegenerative diseases. In general, early detection leads to improved treatment outcomes and a reduction in costs, for both patients and the already overstretched healthcare system.

The trial’s Principal Investigator, BrainEye’s Chief Scientific Officer Associate Professor Joanne Fielding, says that eye movement assessments to determine brain function have typically been conducted in a clinical setting, limiting access to the broader community.

“BrainEye’s revolutionary technology is taking complex science and putting it in the hands of anybody who wants to assess brain health.”

CompliantERP took top gong in the Information Technology category. The small business based at Spring Hill in Queensland works with its clients to close gaps in SAP application security, manage access risk and compliance challenges, and meet audit obligations through its specialist services, tools, and accelerators.

Vigour Graphics won the 2024 Web Development award. Self-described as ‘country people with all the bells and whistles of city technology’, the Toowoomba-based business offers expert knowledge and delivery of strategically designed websites, graphic design and branding, SEO and web maintenance.

More than 100 small businesses were honoured over two nights – 12-13 April 2024 – at Sydney’s The Star, where the culmination of the Champion Awards’ most successful programme in more than a quarter of a century saw more than 2000 small businesspeople converge for the red-carpet two-night gala event.

Each of this year’s Champions received a customised statuette trophy and certificate and gained invaluable kudos as a nationally recognised industry leader.

The only recognition awards programme that celebrates the achievements and considerable economic, social and cultural contribution of today’s 2.5 million small business operators from right across the country, the Australian Small Business Champion Awards specifically highlight the finest small businesses in the retail, services, and manufacturing industries.

“This year’s Awards saw more than 5,500 small business submissions from cities as well as rural, regional and suburban towns in every Australian state and territory,” said Steve Loe, Awards Founder and Managing Director of Precedent Productions, which coordinates the Australian Small Business Champion Awards.

Transport for NSW has unveiled its first enterprise-wide technology strategy, marking a significant milestone in the agency’s evolution.

Led by Sherrie Killiby, the executive director of strategy and engagement, the groundbreaking initiative represents a departure from past practices by integrating customer, operational, and IT technology into a unified framework.

The strategy, designed to guide Transport for NSW’s technological endeavors over the next decade, emphasises a forward-thinking approach divided into three distinct time horizons.

At its core is a shift towards outcomes-based planning, aiming to align technological initiatives with measurable results. By consolidating various technologies, the agency seeks to foster collaboration and enhance interoperability across departments.

While the previous ‘Future Transport Technology Roadmap’ served its purpose during a period of rapid digital transformation between 2021 and 2024, the new strategy extends its vision to 2033 and beyond. The forward-looking perspective enables the agency to anticipate and adapt to future challenges while remaining agile in response to evolving directives.

The Strategic Shift Towards Infrastructure Resilience

Central to the strategy is the concept of digital-by-default, which prioritises technology and data solutions in project planning. Killiby emphasises that this approach goes beyond mere adoption, representing a strategic shift towards infrastructure resilience and operational efficiency.

By integrating digital solutions early on, Transport for NSW aims to maximize the effectiveness and longevity of its infrastructure projects.
