Superloop’s acquisition of Optus subsidiary “Uecomm” is set to enhance its network footprint in key metropolitan areas, complementing its existing infrastructure.

The strategic expansion will boost the company’s ability to deliver high-speed data and internet services across its retail, business, and wholesale segments, reinforcing its position as a leading provider in the telecommunications sector.

Acquisition adds over 2,000 kilometres of high-capacity fibre assets, including 800 kilometres of owned duct, to Superloop’s network.

Currently, Superloop serves more than 455,000 retail, business, and wholesale customers, having gained around 80,000 customers in FY24.

Founded by Bevan Slattery, the company is rapidly growing its retail consumer base, which reached 323,000 by the end of FY24, with a goal of surpassing 500,000 by FY26.

The Uecomm fibre network spans Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane-Gold Coast central business districts and metropolitan areas, providing Superloop with access to over 1,900 buildings and approximately 50 data centres.

“The location of the assets also boosts our Smart Communities ambitions, lowering capex connections to new buildings and broadacre developments,” says Superloop CEO Paul Tyler.

On Monday Google unveiled a ground-breaking quantum computing chip, “Willow,” capable of solving problems in just five minutes that would take the world’s fastest conventional supercomputers a staggering 10 septillion years—a number far beyond the age of the known universe.

Ten septillion years is a timescale that is longer than the universe is old, and the findings demonstrate for the first time that quantum computers are able to complete tasks beyond classical computers.

Developed in Santa Barbara, California, Willow represents a significant leap forward in quantum technology, addressing a critical hurdle: error rates.

Its enhanced stability not only marks a milestone for quantum computing but also promises transformative applications, particularly in advancing fields like artificial intelligence.

Since 2021, quantum computing has been inching closer to mainstream applications, with some experts suggesting it could revolutionise industries such as drug development and battery design within the next five years.

Charina Chou, chief operating officer at Google Quantum AI, said, “These have been really excellent breakthroughs from the team, but they are steps along our journey to a quantum computer for otherwise unsolvable problems, and I want to emphasise this,”

“While this is an amazing project – it’s very fun, it’s a lot of cool science and engineering – the ultimate goal of our computer is to help to get to these otherwise unsolvable problems.”

Starting a small business can be an exciting venture filled with ambition, creativity, and dreams of financial freedom.

But let’s get real for a moment—this isn’t the economic landscape of the early 2000s, where whimsical products and cute knick-knacks sold like hotcakes at weekend markets. No, today’s economy is a whole different beast, and if you’re not prepared to meet its challenges head-on, you may as well pack up your dreams and call it a day

60% of businesses in Australia will fail within their first three years of operation, with 20% of businesses failing in their first year of operating.

Right now, the country has the worst failure rate since the global financial crisis (GFC)

Looking back on the data I found that only 50% of new businesses are actually profitable. The fact is, many small businesses do not survive for very long, and definitely do not thrive in their industry.

Sadly, business failure can happen even if you’re profitable due to many different factors. We are living in tough times. Inflation is climbing, wages are stagnating, and people are tightening their belts like never before.

Disposable income? For many, it’s a thing of the past. In this economic climate, people don’t want to spend their hard-earned money on trinkets.

The first instalment of the podcast is hosted by Miki Luong, IBM Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, spotlighting IBM’s AI experts and thought leaders.

“Generative AI has taken off so suddenly that it’s easy to feel left behind,” said Ms Luong.

“When we hosted our Uncharted event series across Australia (exploring generative AI for an executive audience), we found that even the most accomplished leaders felt unsure about the full implications of this space.

“And if experts in their field don’t feel confident leading a technology as groundbreaking as generative AI, then where does that leave the rest of us?”

“IBM Uncharted: Generative AI explored is our way of trying to answer and amplify the many questions and conversations happening right within organisations,”

“We hope our series will help listeners discover how artificial intelligence will continue to impact the way we work and live,” said Ms Luong.

The first episode features Luong and Adam Makarucha, IBM Client Engineering Leader, exploring the fundamentals of generative AI.

To road-test its Digital Trust Service, Austroads hosted two international events in October 2024 – the Identity and Verifiable Credentials Summit 2024 and the 10th International Interoperability Test Event

“The DTS gives relying parties the assurance that the mDL was issued by a true issuing authority and the trust that it complies with international mDL standards for privacy, security, and interoperability,” said Geoff Allan, Austroads Chief Executive.

“Our testing demonstrated that we can now scale the DTS across Australia. We hope that every state and territory will have mDLs or digital driver licences within the next 18 months and that their keys will be in the DTS,” he said.

More than 450 participants attended the events, bringing together key figures from the European Commission :

  • The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA)
  • The Association of European Vehicle and Driver Registration Authorities (EReg)
  • Senior executives from government services, Australia’s major banks, and leading identity and wallet providers.

“At these events, leading wallet providers and verifiers demonstrated that their technologies could seamlessly work together,” said Allan

“All participants were able to host their cryptographic keys on the Austroads DTS, with 350 tests conducted by 21 providers. The results were a resounding success,” he said.

Three continents have proven that digital credentials can be verified not just across state borders, but internationally.

AI Removes Complexity from Customer Data Management to Accelerate Business Impact and Revenue

According to Statista, the amount of data created, captured, and consumed is expected to increase 165% by 2028. Unfortunately, most brands struggle to piece together customer data fast enough to better understand their customers and take action.

“Our customers have asked for AI solutions to keep up with today’s data demands,” said Tony Owens, CEO at Amperity.

“The difference between market leaders and laggards isn’t just having customer data—it’s how quickly they can transform it into strategic assets for the business,” said Owens

“That’s why we built the Amperity Customer Data Cloud – to give technologists the Customer AI they need to quickly organize and democratise data.” he said

The Amperity Customer Data Cloud uses AI to standardise data, resolve identities, build profiles, and provide access to save time and build more accurate data models.

Through AI-powered identity resolution and data stitching capabilities, it accurately identifies and links customer data across various sources to create and maintain unique, persistent customer profiles over time.

The SMS Sender ID Register is part of the government’s Fighting Scams initiative to address scams and online fraud and protect Australians from financial harm.

The initiative aims to protect Australians from fraudulent text messages often used by scammers to impersonate trusted organisations like CommBank, Linkt, and MyGov, targeting victims to steal personal details.

To support the program, the Albanese government has allocated $10 million to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to establish a national register of verified companies.

Register will make it harder for scammers to misuse legitimate sender IDs, offering an added layer of security for Australians against text-based fraud.

Under the new system, SMS messages will be checked against the register, with unverified messages either blocked or flagged with a warning.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will oversee the register as part of the Albanese government’s strategy to make Australia “the toughest target in the world for scammers.

“We’ve all received scam messages on our phones purporting to be from reputable sources – and it’s costing Australians millions of dollars every year,” Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said.
