AI is now the heartbeat of tech, driving every new gadget and software upgrade with unprecedented capabilities.

The surge has led to a massive demand for semiconductor chips, the essential building blocks for everything digital—from your smartphone and camera to your refrigerator and LED lights.

Some of these chips, like Apple’s powerhouse M4 chip, are redefining what technology can do. Capable of handling a staggering 38 trillion operations per second, the M4 enables features like Live Captions and Visual Look Up on the iPad Pro and is 60 times faster than Apple’s first Neural Engine.

Given the power and influence of these chips, it’s no surprise that countries are fiercely competing for control over this vital market.

U.S. Pushes for Chip Production Dominance

The United States is doubling down on domestic chip production. Through the CHIPS Act, the government announced in April it would award up to $6.4 billion in grants to South Korea’s Samsung to expand chip manufacturing in Texas.

The U.S. has also pressured allies like the Netherlands, Japan, and South Korea to limit their chip exports to China. In response, these countries have enacted their own restrictions.

Last June, the Dutch government announced plans to restrict semiconductor technology exports, citing national security, while Germany recently stopped shipments of older lithography machines to China. Japan imposed its own export controls on advanced microchip technology last year.

In the bustling heart of New Delhi, the sun sets on another day, casting long shadows not just over the streets but also over the lives of millions of citizens.

The global economy is often portrayed as an intricate web, where each country plays a vital role. However, beneath the surface of India’s rapid growth lies a stark reality that is increasingly troubling, especially for our most vulnerable: the elderly.

Recent reports reveal a disturbing trend: India, once seen as a powerhouse of potential, is becoming a significant contributor to global economic instability.

While its GDP growth rates appear robust, the impact of rising inflation and a crumbling social safety net is profoundly affecting the globes aging population.

Meanwhile, millions of elderly individuals, who should be enjoying their twilight years, are instead grappling with a financial disaster due to a scam based out of India.

A surge of scams originating from India is wreaking havoc not only on local victims but also on the global economy, with vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, bearing the brunt.

These scams often target the elderly, who may lack technological savvy and be more easily swayed by persuasive tactics.

Kurtz moved forward and apologised to customers. He said the company is “deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption.”

In an update posted to LinkedIn late Sunday, CrowdStrike said “a significant number” of the 8.5 million devices were back online and operational.

How Many Companies Use CrowdStrike?

CrowdStrike’s cyber security services are responsible for 298 of the Fortune 500 companies, 538 of the Fortune 1000 companies, and 8 out of 10 of the top financial firms

What Happened?

Issues surfaced shortly after the most recent release of CrowdStrike’s Falcon sensor software on Friday. The intended enhancement to bolster system security against cyber threats inadvertently led to devices encountering a “blue screen of death” due to flawed code.

Fei-Fei Li, renowned as the “godmother of artificial intelligence,” made an urgent appeal to President Biden during a gathering at San Francisco’s Fairmont Hotel last June.

In a ballroom setting, the Stanford professor implored Biden to allocate funding for a national repository of computing power and datasets, emphasising the necessity for a “moonshot investment” to enable the nation’s top AI researchers to keep pace with technology giants.

Li revisited this call during Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday, where she was present as a guest of Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (D-Calif.) to advocate for a bill aimed at financing a national AI repository.

She stands among a growing chorus of academics, policymakers, and industry veterans who argue that the exorbitant costs associated with AI research are hindering researchers’ access, thereby compromising the impartial exploration of this rapidly evolving technology.

As behemoths like Meta, Google, and Microsoft pour billions of dollars into AI development, a significant disparity is emerging, leaving even the wealthiest universities in the country lagging behind.

For instance, Meta aims to procure 350,000 specialised computer chips known as GPUs, essential for conducting massive calculations on AI models. In stark contrast, Stanford’s Natural Language Processing Group operates with a mere 68 GPUs to support all of its endeavors.

Proper after attending Situation of the Union speech #SOTU tonight, I had a transient alternate w/ President Biden @POTUS.

Me: “Mr. President, you gave a historic speech by mentioning AI within the SOTU speech for the primary time in historic previous.”@POTUS (smiling): “Sure! And proceed to maintain it secure”. 1/ pic.twitter.com/cJ7vs440forex

The platforms disruption not only affected millions of users worldwide but also sparked a wave of speculation and commentary, including Elon Musk’s Jibe aimed at Meta, formerly known as Facebook.

The cause of the outages on the platforms, all owned by Facebook, was not immediately clear. However, the error messages suggested there was a problem with Domain Name System (DNS),
which allows web addresses to take users to their destinations.

According to Netblocks, Facebook — which runs the free sites — was losing $160 million every hour they are down. The company’s shares were also down 5%

Elon Musk, the owner of X, took a jibe at Meta Platforms – Facebook, Instagram and Threads after they experienced outages stating “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.”

He also shared a tweet by Meta spokesperson saying, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”

Issues were also reported on Meta’s other app Threads – which intends to rival X, formerly known as Twitter, according to DownDetector.

Meta said on its status page earlier: “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

The company disclosed this extension of their collaboration in a post on their corporate website last Friday. Previously, “The Joe Rogan Experience” had been exclusive to Spotify since 2020 under a lucrative multimillion-dollar deal.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported the details of the new agreement on Friday, estimating its value at up to $250 million over several years according to sources familiar with the matter.

The deal includes an upfront minimum guarantee as well as a revenue-sharing arrangement based on advertising income, as reported by the newspaper.

When approached for comment on the financial specifics, including the estimated value of the deal, Spotify declined to provide further details in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Over the years, Joe Rogan has built a significant following for his extensive and diverse interviews featuring guests ranging from comedians and athletes to scientists and conspiracy theorists.

“There’s no script of what we are heading to converse about, and it all just form of transpires in true time,” said Rogan on Spotify’s weblog post.

“It’s just an precise organic discussion with persons savoring by themselves, which is anything we all can relate to, and a little something we all like to do. These conversations have modified the way I consider about existence immeasurably and continue to do so.” he said.

On Monday 7 August 2023, California judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers rejected Google’s request for summary judgment in a lawsuit brought by users who claim that the company unlawfully intruded on the privacy of numerous individuals using ” Incognito Mode”

Those who are suing Google argue that this breach occurred due to Google’s cookies, analytics, and app tools continuing to monitor internet browsing activities even after users activated features like Chrome’s Incognito mode or Safari’s private browsing.

The users had expected a certain degree of privacy. Nevertheless, as we previously highlighted in 2018, the reality is that “private browsing mode” doesn’t truly guarantee privacy.

Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers highlighted statements within Chrome’s privacy notice, Privacy Policy, Incognito Splash Screen, and Search & Browse Privately Help page. These statements discussed how incognito mode restricts information storage or provides options for users to manage the data they share.

Judge Gonzalez-Rogers stated, “Taken as a whole, a triable issue exists as to whether these writings created an enforceable promise that Google would not collect users’ data while they browsed privately.”

The judge also highlighted another point that counters Google’s arguments. The plaintiffs provided evidence indicating that Google combines both regular and private browsing data in the same logs.

Furthermore, even if individual data points seem anonymous on their own, when aggregated, Google can use them to effectively and uniquely identify a user.

Google has revealed that it will expand the accessibility of “Bard”, the tech giant’s artificially intelligent (AI) chatbot, which is being developed to compete against Microsoft’s early dominance in a crucial field of technology.

The tool will be included in the next phase of development for “Bard,” Google’s own AI chatbot, and is aimed at countering Microsoft’s highly publicized release.

Google it has not disclosed the number of individuals who will be granted access to Bard during the technology’s upcoming stage of development. The first wave of applicants will be limited to the US and the UK, with Bard becoming available in additional countries at a later date,

Google is proceeding with caution when it comes to introducing its AI tools, partially due to the potential consequences of the technology providing erroneous information or leading users astray.

This is because Google’s dominant search engine has effectively become the internet’s gateway for billions of individuals, creating the possibility of a significant backlash that could damage the company’s reputation and undermine its ad-based revenue if the AI technology malfunctions.

Despite the technology’s pitfalls, Bard still offers “incredible benefits” such as “jumpstarting human productivity, creativity and curiosity”, Google said in a blog post that two of its vice presidents — Sissie Hsiao and Eli Collins — wrote with assistance from Bard.

Following its debut, Bard suffered an embarrassing error when it incorrectly provided a response to a scientific milestone during a demonstration intended to showcase the tool’s intelligence. The blunder was highly visible and demonstrated that the technology was not infallible.

GPT-4 with it’s 100 trillion ML Parameters and 500 times more powerful than the current ChatGPT built on GPT 3.5 with 175 Billion Machine Learning Parameters will be released as soon as next week.

At the recent “AI in Focus — Digital Launch,” Chief Technical Officer at Microsoft Germany Andreas Braun said, “We’ll introduce GPT-4 next week… We will have multimodal models that provide entirely new possibilities, like videos.”

GPT-4 is the latest version of OpenAI’s large language model, which is trained on vast amounts of online data to generate compelling responses to user prompts.

According to Holger Kenn, Director of Business Strategy at Microsoft Germany GPT-4 would be “multimodal” at the AI presentation and would enable the tech giants AI to translate a user’s text into graphics, music, and video,

Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has impressed many users by creating unique essays, stories, and song lyrics in response to user prompts. However, it has also sparked some apprehension.

In recent weeks, AI chatbots, including Microsoft and Google’s tools, have been criticised for being emotionally reactive, making factual errors, and engaging in what the industry refers to as “hallucinations.”

Two weeks after OpenAI announced that it would allow third-party businesses to access its ChatGPT tool, the news broke that the chatbot could now be incorporated into various apps and services.
