TPG Telecom will bring Giovanni Chiarelli into a new role as chief technology officer, with the CDIO Rob James group among three executives who will emerge under a major executive change.
The telco said it cut the number of executives from 11 to seven with the restructuring.
The big change from a technological point of view is a new executive who will control fixed and mobile networks, IT and digital functions.
Chiarelli – who left MTN South Africa last week as its chief technology and information officer of five years – will step into a newly-created CTO role from January.
TPG also said that its new business function would be “integrated into the consumer unit, led by group executive for consumer Kieren Cooney”, and that wholesale will be led by “Jonathan Rutherford, group executive of enterprise, government and wholesale.”

TPG Telecom appointed Rob James as the group’s chief digital and information officer in August 2020, after TPG and Vodafone merged in a $ 15 billion deal.
James had been CIO of Vodafone and director of corporate enablement before then, and had joined the telecommunications group from Qantas, where he had been the group’s chief technology officer.
Managing director and CEO Iñaki Berroeta said James, Levy and Lloyd have “each made a significant contribution to the business, especially during the formation and integration of the merger.”

Berroeta said that Chiarelli “not only brings global network experience but also expertise in consolidating IT and technology systems.”
