Classifying Tech Blogs
Recently, the topic of “types” of technology blogging has appeared in my conversations more and more often. I will briefly share how I classify the different types of content and would like to know your opinion on this division. At a high level, most of the content (except for conferences etc) is in text form, some in slideshow or video format (such as Business Insider). With that caveat, here’s a list of tech blog content rating systems :
- News & Information: These writers are typically full-time writers, correspondents, and bloggers covering immediate and / or breaking news (or writing in accordance with a proposed embargo), staff relocations, and other reporting activities. Some also write feature stories or track down a story that is out of date, but reveals or “cleans up” something that is unknown in advance.
- Basic (Operational) Knowledge: These blog posts are less frequent, written by people who write about their specific craft (which may include investing) and make it widely available. This group may include founders, operators, investors and current journalists or analysts who manifestly have such relevant experience.
Examples of this type of content include engineering blogs on scaling architectures or blog posts that help your audience understand how someone increased email click conversion by removing images from newsletters. This type of content may occasionally appear on technical blogs, on Quora or Stack Overflow, or usually on the author’s personal blog, among others. These authors are people who have worked on something very specific and / or deep in their work.
- Coverage and Analysis: These authors may work for various technical blogs as journalists or bloggers, but are also analysts or investors in venture capital firms, research firms, or similar venues. While major tech blogs often produce this type of content, the most attention for start-ups and tech is focused on the types of investors.
This is partly because investors control venture capital portfolios and therefore, if done wisely, can be used to create an audience that wants their money and / or attention, but also because many of them have serious operational experience. and / or investment to share it. only a small handful of people in the world do. Sharing your views publicly helps some investors build an audience (large scale) or helps the analyst, etc. to new potential clients, new businesses, new connections and a better reputation.
