Equinix invests $23m expanding the ME2 data centre in Melbourne

Equinix has completed the second phase of the ME2 International Business Exchange data centre expansion in Port Melbourne, which is located near Melbourne, Victoria.

The investment of $16 million (A$23 million) has allowed the company to add more than 500 cabinets to the 1,500 already present, resulting in more than 4,070 square metres of colocation space.

When completed, ME2 will offer over 8,190 square metres of colocation space and 3,000 cabinets.

In response to this expansion, Guy Danskine, managing director of Equinix Australia, expressed his appreciation to the Melbourne ME2 expansion.

According to Danskine the expansion of ME2 in Melbourne reflects our ongoing commitment and strategy to provide our clients with a diverse network and cloud connectivity ecosystem to assist them with their ongoing digital transformation needs.

“Melbourne is a hub for digital innovation and attracts investment in its core infrastructure to support and enable its own transformation.” says Danskine

Colocation space will expand from 4,070 square metres to more than 8,190 square metres as a result of the US$16 million (A$23 million) investment, which adds 500 cabinets to the present 1,500.

Equinix says its Melbourne IBX data centres are business hubs that provide a wide range of network services from over 55 network service providers.

“These data centres serve the growing interconnection needs of companies seeking access to Melbourne,” according to Equinix.

“Our ME2 facility has been expanded to provide secure, high-speed, low-latency digital infrastructure and services, driven by as-a-service consumption models and hybrid multicloud strategies.”

“Melbourne’s importance as a cloud service provider is illustrated by the fact that many major cloud service providers, such as Microsoft, Oracle, and Google, have dedicated cloud regions there, AWS being no exception.”.

Danskine says accessing public clouds locally will provide a range of benefits, inlcuding network efficiency, increased data security, cost reduction, and enhanced collaboration.

According to the Equinix 2022 Global Tech Trends Survey, 49% of Australians said that Melbourne is the most common market to have a presence in or to expand in, with 72% indicating their organisation plans to expand into new markets over the next 12 months
