How Verizon’s C-Band is Changing the Way the Internet Works

What is C-band?

C-band is a section of the radio spectrum that’s located between Ku-band and Ka-band. It’s used by a few different providers for different purposes. One of those purposes is providing internet service over the skies of remote locations.

How C-band is Changing the Way the Internet Works

In the past few years, C-band has become a key piece of the puzzle that is the internet. It’s the reason why you’re able to stream Netflix or YouTube in 4K and why you can download a full HD movie in less than a day. It’s also why businesses are relying more on the internet and investing more in marketing online.

C-band satellites are located in the 39-51 degree orbit, which is ideal for covering large areas with high-speed internet. This is also the most common route taken by existing satellite providers like Direct TV, Dish and the old Hughes system.

How to Get C-Band Satellite Internet

C-band satellite internet is still relatively new and there are only a handful of providers currently serving customers. One of these providers is satellite internet provider HughesNet.

HughesNet is the largest provider of C-band satellite internet and the only one currently providing direct-to-home (DTH) service. The company is controlled by the same people who own DISH, so it’s no surprise that HughesNet also offers satellite TV.

To use HughesNet as your satellite internet provider, you need a subscription to their satellite TV service. If you already have one, you can sign up for satellite internet and get a free over-the-air (OTA) HDTV antenna. Once you’ve got the hardware set up and connected to the internet, you can start enjoying high-speed satellite internet.

Which C-Band Satellites Deliver the Best Performance?

For most people, the best C-band satellite internet service will be based on where you live. Your options will be based on two things: the type of satellite you want and the coverage area of the satellite. The coverage area is the area you can receive a signal from the satellite. it’s the reason why different satellites provide different coverage areas.

The type of satellite you choose will depend on your location. C-band satellites can be either geostationary or non-geostationary. A non-geostationary satellite circles the Earth at a constant height, while a geostationary one appears to stay in one place above the equator.

Non-geostationary satellites are cheaper to send into orbit and can provide coverage for a smaller area. They’re also less likely to be blocked by tall buildings or trees, which means they may not be the best option for people in cities.

Which C-Band Satellites Offer the Highest Speeds?

C-band offers some of the fastest internet speeds available. The top speed currently offered by a C-band satellite is around 50Mbps. However, most people will be happy with speeds of 25Mbps or lower. This is still a significant improvement over the speeds you’d get on a standard home internet connection.

Is C-band Internet Right for You?

If you live in an area with bad or no internet service and you have a wifi-enabled device, C-band satellite internet is a great option. It’s also a good option for anyone who wants faster internet.

However, keep in mind that the performance of a satellite is going to be dependent on the coverage area of the satellite. For example, a satellite that provides coverage for most of the United States is going to be much faster than one that provides coverage for most of rural Alaska.
