The Melbourne Tesla driver was traveling south on Wurundjeri Way at 6km/hour this afternoon when his car mounted a barrier

The impact of the crash caused one of the car’s wheels to fly off and left the car in a difficult position for firefighters to help extricate.

The driver was not injured, but his car was badly damaged.

The driver said he had owned the car and had never experienced an issue with the self-driving function until now and had been driving at less than 6km/hour on the car’s Autopilot function

He said the vehicle suddenly started shaking and veered out of control, mounting a guard rail.

The NY times reported at least three Tesla drivers have died since 2016 while driving with Autopilot engaged. In two cases, the system and the drivers failed to stop for tractor-trailers crossing roadways, and in a third the system and the driver failed to avoid a concrete barrier on a highway

In march 2022 another Melbourne driver blamed his Tesla autopilot for an alleged hit and run leaving a 26-year-old aged care worker is in a critical condition. It was the first case involving a Tesla for Victoria’s major collision investigators.
