The Canberra Innovation Network, CBRIN, is partnering with UNSW Canberra for SpaceHack, a free annual hackathon competition with a prize of up to $10,000.

Taking place on the 16th and 17th of June 2022, the hackathon will encourage participants to apply innovation and creativity to address climate change using space technologies.

Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate and compete for cash prizes by attempting to solve the issues of climate change using space technology. With the help of experienced mentors, teams will have two days to craft ideas and pitch them to a judging panel.

Mentors include Doctor Andrew Sutton, previously a Laser Specialist for NASA, Courtney Bright, a Space Systems Engineer at CSIRO, and Arvind Ramana, Director of Space Technology at the Australian Space Agency, and many more notable names from the space technology field.

The hackathon will include workshops and mentoring, focused on developing ideas and validating them. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with industry, academic and business experts to create impactful pitches of their space-themed ideas to address climate change for the chance to win up to $10,000 in cash.

This hackathon is open to all, CBRIN encourages the participation of diverse groups, students, and anyone with an interest in space, climate action, innovation and technology. Registration and participation are free.

CEO of CBRIN Petr Adamek says, “SpaceHack provides up-and-coming space innovators, including researchers and university students, with an opportunity to sharpen their innovation skills, build their networks, and provides access to incredible mentors and industry resources.”

Professor Emma Sparks, Rector and Dean of UNSW Canberra says the opportunity events like SpaceHack provides are instrumental to creating future solutions to current issues, like the climate crisis.

“I am excited to see what participants come up with. I am proud that academics from UNSW as well as industry experts will be on hand to give guidance and mentoring to participants to work towards ideas to create a better future for Australia and the world.”
